Prepotto:
46° 2′ 48″ North, 13° 28′ 50″ East

Located in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the north-east corner of Italy, the municipality of Prepotto borders on Slovenia for 15 km and owes its name to the Slovenian word pràpot, meaning ‘fern’, a plant that is very common in the area.

Prepotto, also called Prepot in Friulian and Prapotno in Slovene, enjoys a mild climate because it is encircled by the Julian Pre-Alps, which shelter it from the cold north winds, and the proximity of the plain and the Adriatic Sea, no more than 40 kilometres away. It is located at a veritable climatic tipping point, straddling the sea and the Mitteleuropean region, where warm days and cool nights ensure the temperature excursion the grapevines require.

Located 6 kilometres from Cividale and 25 from Udine, Prepotto is a popular destination for a day outdoors surrounded by nature.
This land is not only located at the intersection of no less than three international trails crossing Friuli-Venezia Giulia (the Cammino Celeste, the Alpe Adria Trail and the Via Alpina), it is also crossed by the Judrio River, with its valley offering a constantly changing natural spectacle with its rich flora and fauna.

The area also offers numerous cultural points of interest. The history of the town is closely linked with that of Castelmonte, the oldest sanctuary in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and among the oldest in all Christendom.

Local
excellence

A land where grapevines have been grown since ancient times, Prepotto is known for its production of Schioppettino di Prepotto and of Cialla, an indigenous grape variety native to the Judrio valley and produced only in the area.

Schioppettino di Prepotto and Cialla is the most prestigious indigenous red grape variety of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a variety peculiar to the sub-zone of the same name in the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC. Soils consisting of Eocene marls (known locally as ponca) and the microclimate created by the hills and valleys make the wine produced here truly unique. Red fruit is perfectly balanced with hints of spice and a mineral note that produces wines of great elegance, extremely versatile for pairing.
